On Sunday, I drove to see my brother before he sets off on nine months of travelling. It was a good visit, but this blog isn’t about that—it's about a pit stop on the way. Specifically, a petrol station pit stop.
Now, if you know me, you’ll know I’m no saint when it comes to food. I love to train hard and eat well most of the time, but I’m also human. And for some reason, every time I fuel the car, it triggers this automatic ritual: grab a chocolate bar, a pack of biscuits, and—if I’m feeling particularly celebratory—a Magnum Double Caramel. (A moment of silence, please.)
But this time was different. This time, I paused. I breathed. And I made a choice.
I walked out with cherry tomatoes, bananas, an apple, and a black coffee. No fanfare. No inner choir of angels. Just a conscious decision to try something different. Was it perfect? No. Was it a salad with grilled salmon and quinoa? Absolutely not. But it was a win.
And wins, especially the small ones, matter.
My old habit started in the military. After long days of yomping over hills, wet boots and sore shoulders, the first stop was always a garage, and the reward? Sugar. Salt. Calories. The works. And back then, it made sense. I needed the fuel. But that reflex became a habit—and habits, if we’re not careful, follow us for decades.
Here’s the truth:We don’t change our lives by flipping the whole thing upside down overnight. We change our lives by stacking little decisions—tiny acts of defiance against old patterns.
And that’s the point of this blog. It’s not about perfection. It’s about progress.
You don’t have to overhaul your diet, train seven days a week, or become a green juice evangelist. You just have to take action. One step. One rep. One petrol station decision at a time.
So next time you’re tempted to wait until Monday, next month, or next year to “start,” remember this:
You don’t need to be perfect. You just need to take the next small step.
