Running on empty!

Running on Empty? Why Your Business Needs You at Full Power

Running a small business is like spinning plates on a unicycle... while blindfolded… in a wind tunnel. Add in family life—school runs, meals, partners, pets, maybe the odd teenage tantrum—and it’s no wonder most of us feel like we’re constantly on the edge of burnout.

But here’s the hard truth: your business doesn’t just need your brain. It needs your energy, your resilience, and your ability to show up consistently. That means looking after your health—both physical and mental—isn’t a luxury. It’s mission critical.

The Juggle is Real

You know the drill. Early mornings, late nights, chasing invoices, marketing, firefighting, all while pretending you’ve got it all under control. You skip meals, live on coffee, and convince yourself that walking up the stairs counts as cardio. But here's the thing: if you burn out, the whole operation suffers. You are the engine of your business. And engines need fuel.

Make Time to Train (Yes, You Have Time)

We’re all busy. But if your business is your priority, then your health has to be up there too. Carving out 30 minutes a day to train isn’t selfish—it’s strategy. It clears your head, boosts your focus, and resets your stress levels. It’s not about six-packs or bench presses. It’s about energy, mood, sleep, and being able to chase your kids round the park without needing CPR.

Even a brisk walk, bodyweight session at home, or a few stretches between meetings can shift your whole day. Trust me—there’s nothing like burpees to make email problems seem irrelevant.

Food is Fuel, Not a Footnote

Living on toast, takeaways and the odd banana (because you’re “being good”) won’t cut it. Your body and brain need consistent, quality fuel. Think colour on your plate, lean proteins, fats that actually help you think, and less stuff that comes in a packet with 17 ingredients you can’t pronounce.

Start small. Eat three real meals a day. Drink more water than coffee. Add in one green thing per plate. You’re not aiming for perfect. Just better than last week.

Mental Health Is Physical Health

Stress isn’t just in your head—it’s in your muscles, your sleep, your digestion, your patience levels. Exercise helps, so does decent food, and so does connecting with people who get it. That’s where our networking group comes in. Because we’re not just here to swap referrals—we’re here to support each other through the madness.

Talk to people. Don’t suffer in silence. And don’t be afraid to admit when you’re struggling. You’re not alone—and you don’t have to white-knuckle your way through it all.

Action Plan: How to Get Out of the Chaos Spiral

Let’s bring it back to basics. Here’s what works for me and the clients I coach:

Plan your week on Sunday

Know when you’re training, what you’re eating, and when your downtime is. If it’s not in the diary, it doesn’t exist.

Use time boxing

Block your day into chunks—work, family, food, fitness. It sounds rigid, but it’s freedom in disguise. You wouldn't miss the dentist, so don't rearrange your workout!

Prep meals in advance

Even just sorting lunch the night before saves you making rubbish decisions in a rush.

Get outside daily

A 10-minute walk between calls clears more mental fog than a third coffee.

Stick to your basics

You don’t need a full routine overhaul. Just a few non-negotiables that keep your head and body in the game.

Talk it out

You wouldn’t go to the bank without a business plan—so don’t try and run your life without one. Community, coaching, support—it matters.

Final Thoughts: Be the Boss Your Business Needs

You are your business’s most valuable asset. Treat yourself like it. Train smart. Eat well. Plan ahead. Stay connected. Rest when you need it.

Because this isn’t just about making more money or ticking more boxes—it’s about staying strong enough to enjoy the life you’re working so hard to build.
